Protecting God's Children
This program was selected by the Archdiocese to educate parish adults on ways to identify and prevent child abuse and to create safe environments for children. The Archdiocese expects all parish staff and volunteers to participate in this program.
The program consists of general presentations as well as printed and videotaped materials that focus on the prevention of abuse and the protection of children.
Some of the topics include...
-
Ways to recognize the signs and symptoms that indicate a child is being abused and/or exploited in some way.
-
Environmental factors to be aware of in the physical space of the parish that might lead to the opportunity for abuse.
-
How abusers think and act towards their victims.
-
What parents and adults in positions of responsibility can do to help educate children about what to do and how to respond when an adult behaves in an inappropriate way.
The purpose of the program...
-
To help each of us identify any unsafe situations in parish (and everyday) life.
-
To learn how to respond when faced with an unsafe situation.
-
To create and insure an environment in which our children are protected and safe.
All parish volunteers are required to participate in the Protecting God's Children Program. If you have not yet participated or are a new volunteer at Immaculate Conception, please contact Ms. Jennifer McKiernan at the Religious Education office to sign-up for the next training session.
